Success in the business world does not just happen. It requires a lot of hard work. However, sheer luck can also be a determining factor as regards a firm remaining competitive in our rough economic environment. And Larry Fargo, president of the Ashtabula, Ohio based Fargo Machine Company knows that from firsthand experience.
During 1989, he chanced upon an opportunity to acquire waterjet cutting equipment at an affordable price. At that point, he had no way of predicting this would happen. But years down the road that purchase enabled his business to coast through the recession while many other companies faltered. Because it had this machinery it could perform a marketable service.
Waterjet cutting utilizes high pressure water to cut a variety of different materials, including metals. And it can accomplish that task without causing any burning or corrosion. That makes it particularly valuable within the aerospace and medical industry, Mr. Fargo said. Also important: Through this process it is possible to create a holding fixture where secondary operations can be performed on the materials.
Mr. Fargo thinks that he also had good fortune on his side when he went to a trade show in Independence last summer. He happened to have a booth next to the one occupied by Mary Kaye Denning, CEO and founder of the Manufacturing Mart. This chance meeting led him to become a permanent exhibitor at the Mart’s Galleria headquarters.
“We are looking forward to the Manufacturing Mart helping us return to our pre-recession levels,” Mr. Fargo said. “I went to the expo (that the Mart held last month) and I got 12 solid leads, more than we have ever gotten at any other trade show.”
